Nutrient Bioextraction by the Seaweed Gracilaria tikvahiae at the Mouth of the Bronx River

Rocking the Boat—the Bronx River

Rocking the Boat will improve the water quality of the Bronx River Estuary and build scientific capacity of students. Primary goals of the project include improving the water quality of the Bronx River by removing harmful inorganic nutrients from its waters through bioextraction by native Gracilaria seaweed, engaging young people in hands-on restoration and monitoring in partnership with professional scientists, introducing students to new opportunities, and empowering them to solve environmental problems. The project also aims to educate members of the public about the effects of human activity -- both negative and positive -- on the environment, promoting a greater sense of responsibility and stewardship among the local population. This project is being led by Sam Marquand.
