Demonstrating Market-based Prairie Bird Conservation
Audubon's Prairie Bird Initiative has invested in a market feasibility analysis investigating grass-fed beef as a driver of grassland bird habitat improvements and will now implement the report's recommendations. The birds in greatest need of conservation in North America depend on ranchers. This project will demonstrate financially and ecologically profitable grazing by establishing integrated grazing, marketing, and monitoring plans on two sites totaling over 11,000 acres. It will also implement bird-friendly grazing on at least 4,000 acres of private land. The implementation team will engage a diverse group of advisors such as ranchers and other supply chain participants to advance market-based grassland bird conservation. The project leaders will also bring together a core group able to export the lessons learned through this project throughout the Central and Mississippi Flyways. This project is being led by Justin Pepper.
