Creating Bird Friendly Communities with Low Income Housing Residents
This project will target two low-income housing developments and engage residents and property management in conservation. First, residents will learn about the habitat and wildlife around them, and then they will design and implement a habitat restoration at their complex. Surveys of each site will be performed by community residents before, during and after the project and a cost comparison of maintaining habitat versus traditional landscaping and mowed lawn will be completed. The project will be shared with other Fairville Management Company complex managers, with the Audubon network, and with the trade association the management company owner leads. Neighboring developments will be invited to a culminating ribbon-cutting of the new bird habitat to help encourage other developments to create similar natural spaces for birds. This project is being led by Mark Scallion.
