Training the Next Generation of Farmers to be Stewards of the Land
The purpose of this project is to train the next generation of farmers to be successful entrepreneurs, good stewards of the land, and strong advocates for conservation. Beginning farmers and ranchers will be prepared to plan for and start their own sustainable farms with the following activities during the Farms Next program: integration of conservation practices, methods, and skills into 1,500 hours of field training with mentor farmers; 75 hours of classroom learning with agricultural professionals and expert farmers; farm tours; and peer discussion groups. The corresponding Guide to Conservation Resources and Toolkit will give graduates access to the tools they need to implement these practices on their own farms. Expanding the Farms Next program into other communities around Oregon will train more farmers, while transferring knowledge and best practices from the old to the young.
